An air permeability tester measures how easily air passes through a porous sheet such as a battery separator or a paper. The result is usually given as the time, in seconds, for 100 mL of air to flow through a fixed area at a fixed differential pressure (s/100 mL). This is the Gurley test principle.
For lithium-ion battery separators, air permeability is one of the properties covered by GB/T 36363 Polyolefin separator for lithium-ion battery. For paper, the instrument's reference standards include the ISO 5636 series and TAPPI T460; for cigarette paper, ISO 2965 and GB/T 23227.
The KHT-TQ645 is developed on the Gurley test principle. It uses the Japanese Oken-type volumetric calculation method, and a high-precision imported flow sensor measures the volume of gas passing through the specimen. From that volume the instrument calculates the time a fixed volume of gas needs to pass through the specimen.
The specimen is clamped pneumatically between the upper and lower measuring surfaces and a constant differential pressure is set up across it. The instrument reports the time for 100 mL of air to pass through 6.45 cm² at 1.21 kPa. The differential pressure can be adjusted from 0.05 kPa to 4 kPa to suit the specimen.
It is used for lithium battery separators, tobacco-pack paper, cigarette paper, breathable films, alkaline battery separators and related polymer products. Its test methods cover the Schopper, Bendtsen and Gurley methods.
